What is a REALTOR®?

The term "REALTOR®" is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who has chosen to become a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and abide by its strict Code of Ethics.  The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® is also the The Voice for Real Estate® and the world's largest professional association.

What does this mean to you? It means that any REALTOR® you work with has voluntarily agreed to abide by a Code of Ethics, based on professionalism and protection of the public.  The term REALTOR® has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from adherence to a lofty ideal of moral conduct in business relations.  No inducement of profit and no instruction from clients ever can justify departure from this ideal.  In the interpretation of this obligation, REALTORS® can take no safer guide than that which has been handed down through the centuries, embodied in the Golden Rule, “Whatsoever ye would that others should do to you, do ye even so to them.”

Accepting this standard as their own, REALTORS® pledge to observe its spirit in all of their activities whether conducted personally, through associates or others, or via technological means, and to conduct their business in accordance with the REALTOR® Code of Ethics.  Only REALTOR® members are subject to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of REALTORS®. As such, they are subject to disciplinary action and sanctions if they violate the duties imposed by the Code of Ethics.  The Code of Ethics is a detailed document that spells out the professional responsibilities of every REALTOR®.

The Code of Ethics consists of 17 Articles and related Standards of Practice addressing member duties to clients and customers, the public, and to other REALTOR® members.  Do not hesitate to ask a REALTOR® or our Association for a copy of the Code, including the Standards of Practice.  The Code is your assurance of dealing with a professional who has your best interests in mind.

Founded in 1908, the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® has grown from its original nucleus of 120 members to more than 1 million today. REALTOR® members are involved in a variety of real estate practice including residential and commercial real estate as brokers, salespeople, property managers, appraisers, counselors, and others who are engaged in all professional aspects of the real estate industry.

In addition to their national memberships, our REALTOR® Members also belong to the state association, Washington REALTORS®.  In Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan Counties, REALTOR® members also belong to our local Association, the North Central Washington Association of REALTORS®.

Starting in 1939, the North Central Washington Association of REALTORS® provides a facility for professional development, research, and exchange of information among its members.  We pride ourselves on the professionalism of our members.  If, after discussing matters with your real estate professional or a principal broker in that firm, and you are still not satisfied, our Association provides informal dispute resolution processes including an Ombudsman program and mediation services.  If, after taking these steps, you still feel unsatisfied, you can file an ethics complaint alleging a violation(s) with our Association.  You may download a copy of the current Code of Ethics from our Code of Ethics page on this website and/or request an Ethics Complaint packet.  For more information, please call us at (509) 663-1211 or email info@ncwar.com.
